Banana Bread with Chocolate Chips

My children call this recipe "the best banana bread" and the entire loaf is gone the same day I make it. Over the years, I've added protein powder to sneak in a little extra protein. Let's make this chocolate chip banana bread recipe!

Banana Bread Ingredients:


  • 2 cups all purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1 scoop protein powder (optional)

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 3 overripe bananas

  • 1 tablespoon milk

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon 

  • 1/2 butter, softened 

  • 1 cup white sugar

  • 2 eggs

  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips


Directions:

  • Preheat oven 325F. 

  • Grease glass 8x8 pan or a standard loaf pan. 

  • Mix the dry ingredients: flour, soda, powders, and salt. 

  • Mix the wet ingredients by mashing bananas in a second bowl. 

  • Add milk and cinnamon to mashed bananas. 

  • Using a stand mixer or a hand mixer, cream sugar and butter. 

  • Add eggs, beat gently, then add the banana mix and the dry mix. 

  • Fold in chocolate chips with a spatula. 

  • Pour into a greased loaf pan. 

  • Bake for 50-70 minutes. 

  • Cool on a wire rack to room temperature and serve. 


Notes:

  • For best results, check every 5 minutes starting at 50 minutes. I've found the best way is to use a butter knife in the center. If it pulls out with only chocolate, it's ready. If you drag batter onto the knife, try a few more baking minutes. Dairy free versions take more time to bake. While this is an easy banana bread recipe, this is not a quick bread to bake. It takes about 55 minutes and up to 70 minutes when made dairy free.

  • I use a vanilla protein powder.

  • Overripe bananas taste best in this recipe because they are sweeter when baked

  • You can use a potato masher or a fork to mash the bananas. I've even used the electric mixer!

  • I store in a glass, airtight container on the counter but you could use plastic wrap. 

  • Do not substitute melted butter for the butter. Creaming the sugar with room temperature butter creates the best batter consistency.

  • I've tried adding vanilla extract but found a vanilla protein powder is enough. Experiment to your liking!

  • This recipe is edible as banana muffins... but my kids favor the loaf pan version. 

  • Add favorites nuts to make a banana nut bread! 

  • You can substitute greek yogurt or applesauce for the eggs. 

  • Double the recipe and bake both at the same time for a lot of banana bread! Freezes for 3 months. 

  • The original recipe came from AllRecipes in 2016 but I've modified over time.

How to make it dairy free:

  • Substitute chocolate chips, milk, and butter with your dairy-free favorites

  • I use Chobani Extra Creamy Oat Milk, Country Crock plant butter, and Enjoy Life Chocolate Chips.
